Café Demel is among one of the most famous cafes in Vienna. At the entrance, your attention catch the flawless cakes. Even Empress Sisi was going here for cakes. Although I'm not the Empress, I felt like one during this visit.
Inconspicuous from the outside, charming inside. If you just do not desperately want classic Sacher, Demel will not disappoint you. Cakes are chocolate, fruity, creamy and also not so traditional Viennese. I am the chocolate fan, so there was no doubt that I will try super chocolate cake. In Demel, it is busy in the afternoon. You often must wait to get a table, even just for two. The staff is diverse and it is obvious that more tourists should plan to try Café Demel. I think the difference from the Hotel Sacher is clear. Even if Sacher owns an original recipe for the cake, Demel has another triumph. Perhaps much stronger. Demel attracts to the atmosphere of the 19th century, the aristocracy and it gives you the feeling that there is nothing other than you, a cake and classy interior with heart.
On the way upstairs, you can see through the glass into the kitchen, where they produce cakes. The service is graceful and elegant. Prices are not low but you get what you pay for. A coffee is for 4 Euro and cakes start at the same price. I opted for the chocolate cake, which I enjoyed more than the Sacher long time ago. It was divinely full of nougat. The rich flavor, aroma of chocolate, airy crust ... such a food orgasm. Coffee has maintained its standard. Overall, everything is on a balanced level.
Demel is a museum of cakes. The history is since 1786 and you will not be disappointed!
If you do not need something sweet, there are some salty pleasures as well.
It is good to sit outside but you will not feel the charming atmosphere. Why not to feel like a member of a Royal Family for once?
Maybe the best chocolate cake ever!
